A Japanese movement, and a crystal that does not scratch.
Forty millimetres of steel on a folding safety clasp, running on a Miyota 8215 wound by your own wrist. Sapphire over the dial, ten bar behind the case. The specification of a watch costing considerably more, in the proportions that have worked for seventy years.
The Detail
Miyota 8215.
A Japanese automatic calibre made by Citizen, in production for decades and serviceable by any watchmaker. Most watches at this price name no movement at all, which tells you something.
Automatic, not battery.
Wound by the motion of your wrist, with the option to wind it by hand. Leave it off for a couple of days and it stops until you pick it up again.
Sapphire crystal.
The hardest material used in watchmaking short of diamond. Keys, desks and door frames leave no mark on it.
Forty millimetres.
The size that suits most wrists without announcing itself. Large enough to read at a glance, small enough to disappear under a cuff.

Taking Care Of It
Keep it running.
Worn daily, it winds itself. If it stops after a spell in the drawer, turn the crown gently a few dozen times and reset the time. The 8215 holds roughly forty hours off the wrist.
Water.
Ten bar covers swimming and everyday exposure. Avoid hot showers and saunas, where heat rather than depth works against the seals. Rinse with fresh water after the sea or a pool.
The crown stays closed.
Pull it out only when the watch is completely dry, and push it fully home afterwards. Water resistance depends on it being seated.
Setting the calendar.
Avoid changing the date between nine in the evening and three in the morning, while the movement is already turning it over.
Magnets.
Speakers, laptop lids and phone cases hold stronger magnets than you would think. Prolonged contact affects timekeeping on any mechanical watch.
